![]() ![]() The magnet is physically connected to a mechanical power switch, which opens as the magnet moves into the field. As voltage increases, so does the current, strengthening the magnetic field produced by the coil and pulling the core towards the field. The magnetic field produced by the current attracts a moving ferrous core held back under spring tension or gravitational pull. In electromechanical regulators, voltage regulation is easily accomplished by coiling the sensing wire to make an electromagnet. However, many regulators have over-current protection, so that they will entirely stop sourcing current (or limit the current in some way) if the output current is too high, and some regulators may also shut down if the input voltage is outside a given range (see also: crowbar circuits). If the output voltage is too low (perhaps due to input voltage reducing or load current increasing), the regulation element is commanded, up to a point, to produce a higher output voltage–by dropping less of the input voltage (for linear series regulators and buck switching regulators), or to draw input current for longer periods (boost-type switching regulators) if the output voltage is too high, the regulation element will normally be commanded to produce a lower voltage. (Stability is avoidance of oscillation, or ringing, during step changes.) There will also be a trade-off between stability and the speed of the response to changes. This forms a negative feedback control loop increasing the open-loop gain tends to increase regulation accuracy but reduce stability. Any difference is amplified and used to control the regulation element in such a way as to reduce the voltage error. Zener diode regulators make use of the zener diode's fixed reverse voltage, which can be quite large.įeedback voltage regulators operate by comparing the actual output voltage to some fixed reference voltage. When higher voltage output is needed, a zener diode or series of zener diodes may be employed. Since the forward voltage of a diode is small, this kind of voltage regulator is only suitable for When precise voltage control and efficiency are not important, this design may be fine. Due to the logarithmic shape of diode V-I curves, the voltage across the diode changes only slightly due to changes in current drawn or changes in the input. 7/2/2023 0 Comments Nozbe podcast![]() Well… I failed at last three times to finally hit it with Nozbe. But I decided to try myself and build my own startup. I had a quite nice resume – two business college degrees, three foreign languages spoken fluently – they suggested I could get a really good job in a prestigious international company. When I graduated from college many people were questioning my choice of going on my own. I guess I was raised to run a business – and these are my entrepreneurial parents who are to blame (You can read more about them in a blogpost I wrote a few years ago – ). I couldn’t really imagine myself in any other place. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. Typesy: Did you ever have the specific goal of running your own company, or did your Nozbe venture simply evolve over time, from your own personal tool to one that people around the world are using to help manage their productivity? I think they will let us go outside the box and inspire us while planning and looking for solutions. In the end though, I realized that there is no inconsistency between having stretch goals and working step by step with “small wins” to get them done. I am a great advocate of a small steps method so I was a little bit at crossroads with these bold goals I set to myself and the whole Nozbe team. Goals like these might be really discouraging and cause frustration – I experienced that not so long ago while planning new Nozbe marketing strategy for the end of this year and the entire 2016. This is an ambitious vision rather than a goal and it requires you to go out of your comfort zone and “stretch” your capabilities beyond the usual performance. This is a goal that you can’t achieve by using your regular procedures, planning habits and tools. Typesy: One of your recent blog posts mentions “stretch goals.” What is a stretch goal? These panels cover everything from avionics compartments to wiring, and Atlantis has more than 200 miles of wiring on board. The inspectors are looking for any nicks, gauges and other defects. "We have quality that do it with their eyes and with flashlights and 10 times magnifying glasses, if required." White says each one is inspected several times. Maleficent derives from Latin and means "harm" or "evil." Like many an archetypal villain, Maleficent has a troubled backstory, which explains her wickedness and makes her ever so slightly more sympathetic. Maleficent has surprisingly risen more than 5,000 spots on Bab圜enter's list of most popular names since 2021, with possible thanks to the Disney film Maleficent and Angelina Jolie's depiction of the evil fairy from Sleeping Beauty. It's no surprise that many groups of women have embraced Lilith as a symbol of independence and empowerment. In mythical Assyrian legend, Lilith is the name of a demon with sinister powers. Other versions tell of Lilith growing wings and flying away by choice. Lilith translates from Latin as "of the night" or "night monster." Here's a BS word with a long history and many specific purposes, tiny and tricky though they may be. Whether a load of Niagara Falls is more bullshit than a bunch of Jackson Pollocks is hard to say. So just as apples and pears means stairs, these names took on new meanings-for testicles and nonsense. Niagara Falls rhymes with balls, and Jackson Pollock rhymes with bollock. However, there's a simpler explanation for why these terms are in the bullshit lexicon: You can blame Cockney rhyming slang. Many people have probably looked at Jackson Pollock's artwork-in all its paint-splattering, abstract glory-and thought, "That's bullshit." Some may feel that Niagara Falls is like a leaky faucet compared to the Grand Canyon, and therefore bullshit. Even if you elude Big Brother, there's no escape from Big Bullshit. This word launched the suffix -speak, which can be found in words such as management-speak, teacher-speak, and parent-speak. In Counterpunch, Abby Martin discusses vile terms such as mowing the lawn (mowing down civilians) and other revolting uses of language: "Disturbing Newspeak phrases that absolve their pillaging and mass murder have permeated society and warped our interpretation of reality." That's the essence of newspeak: thought control. Nowadays any kind of baffling or coercive language used by politicians or the media could be labeled newspeak, particularly euphemisms. Their overall purpose is control: That's why newspeak caught on as a term for language that seems determined to stifle thought rather than convey it. Newspeak isn't quite a language: It is a group of mostly compound terms such as goodsex and crimethink. Some BS words have a more literary pedigree than others, and that's certainly true of this word coined by George Orwell in his famous dystopian novel 1984, published in 1949. If we ever run out of them, I'll be gobsmacked. This very popular word can be found everywhere from Irish newspapers to the title of literary magazine the Gobshite Quarterly. As seen in words like drivel and palaver, spit is never far from the bullshit lexicon. Its 1986 use in John Hockey's Squaddies: Portrait of a Subculture is characteristic, as the author describes a sergeant who "was a regular gobshite always shouting at you in barracks."Īnother sense of gob may have influenced this word: It's been a verb meaning spitting and a noun for a wad of spit. By the mid-20th century it can be found referring to a fool, then a fool with a big mouth. This mostly Irish word first turns up as a term for a seaman in the U.S. Then you could tell your friend to make up for the insult by buying you nachos.Įven if you elude Big Brother, there's no escape from Big Bullshit. ![]() If a friend said, "I heard you hate nachos," you could reply, "Applesauce!" as a firm denial. The word can also be used a simple dismissal of something. Often it means lies or flattery, as in this example from Ring Lardner Jr.'s The Love Nest and Other Stories: "I wasn't born yesterday and I know apple sauce when I hear it, and I bet you've told that to 50 girls." Or maybe applesauce tasted like pure crap to someone, because this has been a synonym for nonsense since at least the 1920s. ![]() Maybe this term was influenced by horse apples, a euphemism for horseshit. Horseshit and rubbish aren't highly valued, to say the least.īut applesauce? That origin isn't so clear. It's obvious why some words become synonyms for bullshit.
